The family of Eric Malzkuhn welcome the public to attend a Celebration of the Life of Frederick Malzkuhn (Malz) memorial service at MSSD Theatre Malz on March 27th, 4:00-5:00 pm. A reception will be held in the Peikoff Alumni House after the service.
Malz died January 23rd at the age of 85. He earned a baccalaureate degree from Gallaudet University in 1943, and received an honorary doctorate in 1993. He also earned a master of fine arts degree from Catholic University. Malz was a loyal member of the Gallaudet University Alumni Association and he served on the GUAA's Laurent Clerc Cultural Fund Committee from 1994-1995. According to legend, Malz was partly responsible for the bison becoming Gallaudet University's mascot. He was a member of Gallaudet "Five Iron Men" basketball team who won the 1943 championship title which brought fame and glory. Malz was gifted in so many areas -- teacher, actor, playwright, director, translator, poet, writer, sportswriter, tale teller, and friend. Malz was instrumental in placing theatre in sign language on the world stage, adapting many classics for sign language productions in conjuction with the National Theatre of the Deaf. He was heavily involved with the Gallaudet Dramatics Club as an undergraduate and ran the Model Secondary School for the Deaf's theatre program from 1973 to 1986. The MSSD auditorium on the Gallaudet University campus was named in his honor, "Theatre Malz." Malz was also a filmmaker during the 1940s. Condolences may be expressed to the family at

Good Morning America Live from the Clerc Center
Good Morning America came to film at KDES and MSSD for a show about Marlee Matlin who is performing on Dancing with the Stars. The ABC TV crew interviewed five students, two from KDES and three from MSSD, Tara Downing and Yola Rozynek. They filmed the National Deaf Dance Academy Pre-Teen Hip-Hop Dance group at KDES and filmed students performing "Classroom Antics" from MSSD's winter dance concert. The show airs Monday, March 24 at 7:00 a.m. Make sure to watch our stars!
