A new production....

Nobody’s Perfect, based on the book by Marlee Matlin and Doug Cooney, is a joint world premiere by the Kennedy Center and VSA arts.

Fourth grade is not easy and after spending a year planning her “positively purple” birthday party, Megan finds herself at odds with new student Alexis. This lively musical—simultaneously performed in spoken English and American Sign Language, and also captioned—is a poignant reminder that despite first impressions, nobody’s perfect. Ages 9 & up.

An Announcement from Don Mahoney, Assistant Principal

Friday, Sept. 28th is an “Early Closing Day” with a 1:00 pm dismissal time.

During these special days throughout the year, teachers will be given the opportunity to focus on student portfolios and Delaware Standards. This will be made possible due to the generous contributions of time, energy and talent on the part of many Kendall School staff. The Early Closing Day’s schedule is in your mailbox.

Thanks to everyone who “volunteered” to conduct special class sessions related to the 2008 Summer Olympics. Also, I want to thank Rosemary
A-Balzer for her diligence and enthusiasm in planning and coordinating these special days for our students. Have a fun and productive day everyone.

(P.S. I’ll be teaching too – can’t wait)

New KHSO Officers

Thanks to all who came to the Back-to-School night. It was a huge blast! FYI, our incumbent KHSO officers were unanimously elected as our new KPTA Officers, with these changes: Delia Lozano-Martinez is President for 2 years, John Spinosi (former treasurer) is Vice-President for one year, John Edington (former VP) is Treasurer for 2 years, and Eric S Scott is Secretary for 1 year (all future elections will be for 2-year terms).

We look forward to seeing many of the new and prospective PTA members at our monthly Board meetings (2nd Tuesday of every month @ 6pm in room # 2311, anyone is welcome). The DCPTA President who visited was SO impressed with how "by-the-book" we were, and we don't even HAVE "the book" (yet), she's bragging on us to the NATIONAL PTA! Thank you for your support, and we do look forward to meeting, sharing information, and working with all of you!

Delia, John, John, & Eric.

PTA Meeting

KHSO is now officially a member of the DC-PTA and National PTA organizations! The membership dues are only $5.00 per member (some schools charge up to $500.00!!) and there will be a membership table open in the main lobby all evening. Members can join at any time, and non-members are always welcome to attend the monthly board meetings on the 2nd Tuesday of every month (which replaces PAP on the calendar). We will have our nominations and election promptly at 6:30. Only registered members may vote in general and board meetings. This Thursday, we will be electing a PTA President and Treasurer for 2-year terms and the VP and Secretary to 1-year terms (next year, and thereafter they will all be up for 2-year terms every other year).

Assistant Principal's Corner

Hello everyone, hope you had a great Labor Day Weekend.

·Today – KASP/KARP-Rec. will begin, and the Volleyball Season practice is under way as well. Any questions about KASP should be directed to Ruth Innes. KARP questions go to Steve Doleac.

·I am very pleased to welcome back our Super Parent Volunteer, Mr. Eric Scott. Eric will be back at the front desk. However, I want to let everyone know that we will still need lots of Parent and Staff Volunteers to cover all of our needs this year. For now we will still need assistance at the front desk, and we will be announcing other short periods of time needed to assist ECE as well. Please contact Ruth Innes if you can help out.

·Many many thanks to all of who helped out to cover the front desk this July and August. I was really gratified to see such team work and so many helping out. A big thanks to all of you listed below. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Alice Kriesle, Michelle Jefferson, Mary Carew, Lori Lutz, Pat Atunoah, Cynthia Sadoski, Tim Worthylake, Abdillahi Always, Rebecca Stevener, Richard Jeffries, Chuck Kelley, Yinka Fakunle,Gary Hotto, LaWanda Jackson, Ida Gerald, Matthew Goedecke, Cathy V-Pearce, Cathy Carroll, Anita Gilbert, Renee Suiter, Linda Delk, Blanche Drakeford, Ricky Suiter, Marteal Pitts, Gwen Susswell

·Whoever used KDES Auditorium last year, please remove items from the back of the stage. We need to clean up the back area of the stage.

Sincerely, Don Mahoney

School is back and so is the KHSO!

Our next meeting (currently identified on the school calendar as PAP) will be September 11th, at 6 pm in Room 2311 and will be the first of our new monthly Board meetings, repeating on the second Tuesday of every month. The week after that, on Thursday the 20th is KDES Back-to-School night (more information on that later).

As a reminder, last spring we held a ballot to determine our future direction. Of those who voted, the great majority by far chose to pursue PTA affiliation, thus the night of the 20th will also include an election of officers. This election will require you be a member to vote, and at this time the annual dues have been set at $5.00 for each member. (We may look into individual/family rates in the future.)

We need a minimum of 10 PAID members -THIS WEEK- to get our new PTA rolling. All new memberships will run from now till sept 30, 2008. See Eric Scott, volunteer at the KDES front desk on T/W/Th (and current KHSO/Interim KPTA Secretary), and/or send a request for the form to eric.s.scott@gmail.com and return both form and dues to KHSO (at KDES).
