Marie Jean Philips ASL Storytelling, Poetry, ABC and Deaf Art Competition

I would like to share with you about the Marie Jean Philips ASL Storytelling, Poetry, ABC and Deaf Art Competition. During the recent half day, students from teams 1 to 8 learned about Marie Jean Philips and the competition itself. Marie Jean Philip was a Bilingual Bicultural Coordinator at the Learning Center School of the Deaf in Massachusetts. She passed away 13 years ago. The competition was established 10 years ago in the honor of late Marie Jean Phillip. This year is 10th anniversary of the competition. Although many other schools have participated, this year will be the first for our students.

Many students from teams 1-8 have already signed up to participate in the ASL contest. There are four categories in this competition; ABC Letter Art, ASL Storytelling, ASL Poetry and Deaf Arts.

Since many students are participating, the ASL/Deaf Studies Department will become the judges for “in teams” competition before February 1st second round of competition. The second round competition will be held on February 1st at 9am to 10:30am and the finals will occur on February 2 from 2pm to 3pm in the KDES Auditorium. The judges for the second round and the final competition are: Jim Adams from Residence Educator in Model Secondary School for the Deaf; Leticia Arellano, ASL Evaluator from CASLL in Gallaudet University; Janis Cole, Adjunct Instructor from Deaf Studies in Gallaudet University; and Nancy Walla, ASL Trainer from Laurent Clerc Center. I am still in the process of looking for more judges.

All teachers are aware of the competition. Your child already has opportunities to create his/her talent at school, but, may need additional help from home. It would be appreciated if you could help your child at home.

If you have any questions, please do see me or send me an email. My email address is Francisca.Rangel@GallaudetUniversity.edu See on the back for the rules.

Many thanks,

Francisca Rangel

Space Committee

At last week’s KDES school-wide meeting, I announced the initiation of a “KDES Space Committee”. One teacher told me they thought maybe it was a project about the stars and planets (no, I will not divulge the name!) so I thought I would send out a little info about it.

I was asked by the Principal at PMT to start a committee to examine “how we are using our space at Kendall School?” Throughout the years, student numbers, staffing plans, programs, and many other factors change. It will be the task of the committee to examine current programmatic needs and then to make subsequent recommendations re: the use of space to meet our needs.

The recommendations will fall into 2 categories:

1. Short term recommendations:
Any moves or changes, we recommend to try to accomplish for the Fall of
2007.(i.e. August 07)

2. Long term recommendations: any moves or changes that would serve our needs
in the future, but which could not be resolved by Fall 2007.

The committee is scheduled to meet on Thursdays, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, starting next Thursday, 1/18/07 and continuing until 3/1/07.Yes, the Principal needs the recommendations by March 1st.

Because this committee will be examining the use of space on all three floors of Kendall School, we would like to have a representation from each unit at Kendall. To date, members are: Maureen Burns, Gail Solit, Rosemary Stifter, Nicole Sutliffe, Cynthia Sadoski, Stephany Sims, Susan Schatz, Francisca Rangel, Lynn Olden, Patrick Atunoah, Catherine Valcourt-Pearce and Don Mahoney.

We would like to be sure that each unit is represented. Please contact me to arrange this, as the 1st meeting is scheduled for 1/18/07. If you have any questions, please contact me or stop by.
Thank you.
Don

This is to let you know that the Storage Room here at KDES (across from KDES Pool and Gym) is now being cleaned out. A lot of stuff is sitting in the hallway near the gym. Please find time to go there and look at the stuff. You may want some for your classroom or office. Please label them with your name/room number and they will be moved to your destination tomorrow. Otherwise, they will be trashed.
