Optimist Club

Yesterday, 4 Kendall students participated in the Annual Optimist Club Contest which promotes the development of Literacy and public speaking skills. The students write an essay with strict format guidelines and then present their essay for Optimist Club members and judges in various local chapters. The final State Champion receives a $1,500.00 scholarship award.

I am always proud to say that over the past years, quite a few Kendall School students have won that State Championship! Of course, this cannot happen without the guidance and advocacy of some very special Kendall Teachers. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to Ms. Elizabeth Hall, who has been leading the effort to provide this opportunity to Kendall students for many years. Our appreciation is also extended to Ms. Sherry Pedersen who does such a great job preparing the students for their presentations.

Yesterday, Beth and Sherry led our Kendall students to the local contest for the Alexandria Chapter of the Optimist Club at Belle Haven Country Club. In the elementary age group, the winner was Bridget Berrigan. In the high school group, the winner was Shadaye White. 2nd place was awarded to Lily McNamara and 3rd place went to Anna Lynch. Please join me in congratulating these students (and the teachers) in a job well done. Stayed tuned as 3 of our students will also participate in the Arlington Local Contest on 1/10/07.

Thanks again to all of the Teachers, Staff , Administrators, Parents and Peers who have supported this terrific opportunity for our students.

Microsoft Outlook

Recently, while troubleshooting email problems at KDES I’ve noticed that many of you are using Gallaudet Web Email as your primary email program. While Gallaudet Web Email can be a dependable and serviceable program many of you might find it awkward, slow and without many of the features you’d like to see in an email program. This might be a good time to consider switching over to Microsoft Outlook.

Outlook is a very sophisticated program with lots of features. Besides having an email component so you can check your email Outlook has a calendar and task feature to help you keep track of your appointments and projects/tasks. It also has an easy-to-use contacts area for keeping track of your addresses and distribution lists. Outlook can even help you manage your incoming junk mail and spam.

Let me know if you’d like to switch over and I’ll stop by to set you up and give you a quick lesson.
Thanks.
Bill (William.Humm@Gallaudet.Edu)

Head’s Up!

Just in case you missed the Daily Digest of today, 12/13/06, the HMB parking lot will be closed on 1/15/07 in order to permit construction of the new SLCC building to begin. That means we at KDES and MSSD should expect a few more folks to be parking in our garages and on our streets as a result. Hopefully it will not preclude any Clerc Center people from parking near our schools, but there may be more of a crunch than our current routine.

Please check the Daily Digest for additional info. Have a great day.

Don
