  • Dear KDES students, teachers and staff -
As I spend my last few days here as the KDES school social worker, I wanted to share a few words with you. Please know that I consider myself very fortunate to have worked with such wonderful, kind and supportive people during the last 10 years. We have truly worked as a team in our efforts to improve the quality of life for our students. You have given me incredible and generous support through two personal tragedies, as well as through challenging professional situations. Being moved from MSSD to KDES in 1996, during restructuring, was the best thing that could have happened to me. It gave me a place to work where I felt valued, respected and appreciated. It also gave me the opportunity to learn new skills in working with younger deaf children. And of course, the opportunity to know so many of our students, their families and all of you.

I am brought to tears (lots of them, as you may have noticed) by your kind words, hugs, messages of encouragement and displays of appreciation. There are so many people here who are very special to me. I especially want to recognize and thank the present (and past) members of our mental health team who have provided an atmosphere of trust, collegiality, team work and rock solid support.

I will visit as often as I can. Please feel free to call, e-mail or stop by and see me in the social work department at Gallaudet.

  • The Transportation Department would like to share wonderful news with KDES that we received from the National Association of Pupil Transportation (NAPT) about the winners in the National School Bus Poster Contest.

Our student, Jackelin Choque from Team 4/5 was announced as 3rd place winner in the poster contest. She will receive $100 savings bond from the NAPT. HATS off to her for her excellence.

We had several students participating in the drawing poster contest and we chose three winners. First place was Jackelin Choque. The second place winner was Kelly Doleac and Wendy Brehm placed third. We sent their posters to the NAPT for the national contest.

The Transportation Department wants to thank Wei Shen, KDES Art Teacher for his continuing assistance and time. He provided students the guidance to create posters. We also thank the KDES Team Leaders for supporting the contest and to the teachers for encouraging students to participate.

The Transportation Department will sponsor a pizza party for the winners and all students who participated in the poster contest this month. We will present certificates and prizes to participants at the party.

Please join us in congratulating Jackelin for her big win and the other winners for their grand job.

We look forward to even more student participation for the October 2006 contest when the theme will be “Be Aware! Cross with Care”.

Thanks,
Kim Craig
