Inclement Weather Procedures

Good morning everyone, well it's that time of year. There is a rumor of snowflakes heading our way and so I thought I'd better print out this friendly reminder. Please remind all new families that these are our guidelines for "closings" due to inclement weather. Have a good week.

INCLEMENT WEATHER/CLOSINGS/DELAYED OPENINGS

KDES follows Prince George's Co. Public Schools (PG) for all changes in the regular schedule (i.e. closings, delayed openings, and early dismissals) due to inclement winter weather. KDES does not follow PG Co. Public Schools' closings due to excessive heat in spring or summer. When Gallaudet University is closed, KDES is closed for the entire day for students, teachers and staff.

Procedures related to closing KDES:
All students and parents/guardians and caregivers should receive the information regarding closings or delays via television or the media. As per Clerc Center guidelines, if any other county is closed but KDES/PG is open, KDES transportation will not pick-up or return students who live in any closed county.

Delayed Openings:
If KDES is scheduled for early dismissal (1:00 pm) and PG Co. announces a "delayed" opening, KDES will be closed for students and teachers.

Early Closings (students are at school, but school closes before 3pm):
The assistant principal will announce the early closing throughout the school. The KDES team personnel will phone parents/guardians and caregivers to tell them of the closing time, and to request that they pick up their child early or meet the school bus early.

Special Procedures for KDES ECE:
If KDES/PG has a two-hour delayed opening, school will be cancelled for the PIP and Nursery students. However, PreK and Kindergarten students will be picked up for school.

The CDC follows the school closings of Gallaudet University. Listen to your local stations and if you see or hear that Gallaudet University is closed, then CDC is closed. If the University closes early, then so does CDC. If the University opens late due to inclement weather, then CDC will open at the same time. You can always call the center if you have questions. The center does not follow the same closings as PG Co. Schools and KDES.
