What kind of Bookbags do you need?

At the Clerc Center, we have been developing new bookbags, based on what you would like. As you are aware, we have 100 bookbags available. They include a variety of books, including a group of board books for infants and preschool children (Group E), 30 holiday books (Group F, G, H), a set of Clifford books (Group I), and a set of books related to the world of work (Group J). They are all available at http://clerccenter.gallaudet.edu/products/srp-bookbags.html.

This year (2006) we will be doing 30 new books related to emotional intelligence. The books will focus on children's books that focus on self-awareness, empathy, motivation, handling emotions, and social skills.

I wanted to find out other kinds of bookbags you would like for the Shared Reading Project. We try to plan ahead for the 2007 school year, because it takes a bit to get permissions from publishers, etc.

So, any suggestions based on your experiences with the Shared Reading Project in your site? Let us know!

Shared reading goes to the dogs!

I've been reading a lot about shared reading that children do with their teachers, their parents, and their siblings and peers, but this is a new one -- shared reading with dogs! Kids are finding dogs to be just the devoted and nonjudgmental audience they need. Here's a link to the recent Boston Globe article -- Hearing a tale while wagging the tail

SRP storybook videotapes

Hi,

You know videotapes where the parents can watch to help their signing skills for the story if they forgot certain signs after the tutoring session. I have noticed most of my families have DVD only. I was wondering if SRP plans to make the transfer from the videotapes to DVD cd-rom. It would be great to have all the stories on one cd-rom so the parents can pick the exactly story the tutor practiced with them for that week.

Shared Reading Project sites in the United States

Just wanted to let you know the current number of sites in the United States.
(Based on the 2004-05 SRP Directory Survey)

35 of 59 schools, programs, organizations, and others identified themselves as a SRP site for the 2004-05 school year. Of the 35 SRP sites,
16 were separate schools for the deaf
12 were public schools
2 were nonprofit organizations
2 were other types of organizations
3 were unknown (respondents did not identify their program type).

Keep it up!

Spanish Speaking Families

Hi Everyone,

I work in Southern California with the Los Angeles County of the Education. We are in our fifth year with Shared Reading Project. Currently, we have about 10 tutors with 25 families. Most of our families speak Spanish. It is nice to see our Spanish parents learning ASL. Also, they can communicate with their DHH children, too. For our Deaf tutors, sometimes they get confused because they rely on ASL and lipreading English but when they encounter Spanish parents, they speak Spanish and sign ASL at the same time. The tutors had to ignore the parents' mouths and look at the hands. It is funny. I am wondering if any of you have worked with Spanish-speaking families.
