Wow! What a day we had yesterday at Six Flags!!! We had so much to share. We not only shared our experiences in ASL, we also wrote about our experiences in our Writing Journal.

Cynthia is helping Ronald find the names of the rides on the map.

Franco is cutting out pictures from the internet for his writing prompt. He chose Superman The Ride of Steel roller coaster as his favorite.

Fatou wrote her writing piece on the Joker's Jinx.

Today is Franco's birthday so we celebrated with icecream and brownies from the left over sales at lunch time. Franco just turned 10 years old. Congratulations Franco!

Day Eight Fieldtrip to Six Flags

Should we go? Should we stay? These questions were in everybody's mind. We finally decided to go even though the weather forecast predicted thunderstorms and rain. We got on the bus on a cloudy and foggy day and rode to Largo, Maryland. We all were so excited to finally get on the rides. Ronald's mother and sister joined us for the fieldtrip.

We had to check if we were tall enough for the rides so we stood by the measuring stick. Ronald's sister could not ride the Octopus. She was under 42" inches. Derika and Ronald sat together on the Octopus roller coaster and swirled around. Can you see them?

Watch the short movie clip and see if you can spot Derika and Ronald.

Which staff person from Team 4,5 joined the Octopus ride? Click on the comments section and respond to the question.

Franco and Ethan enjoyed car games at the arcade.

Tyese, Cynthia Derika, Fatou and Jackelin went aboard the Joker's Jinx. They had a blast.

Day Seven

Fatou working on her project. She was writing down the names of the rides she could go on. Her height is 58''. She can ride Joker's Jinx.

Jackelin's height is 55 inches. She can ride on the Joker's Jinx, Shipwreck Falls and swim in the Buccaneer Beach.
Ronald's height is 54 inches. He can ride the Teacups, the Octopus, Riddle Me This and the Flying Carousel .

Before our last day of fundraising, we had to finish up our measuring activity. We measured our heights.

We had our last day of Fundraising! It was our last chance to earn spending money for Six Flags.

When we arrived to KDES, we noticed black clouds outside and we wondered what to do. The weather predicted rain but it did not rain. We decided to go ahead again with the car wash.

We set up the same three fundraising events.

Here is how much we earned today:

Car Wash $59.26
Lemonade Stand $ 40.00
Sundae Stand $ 130.00

How much did we earn altogether?

Students Stories

Each day, one student will tell a story in ASL about something that happened in ESY. The story will be videotaped and posted in our blog.

Gabrielle explains how we must watch the weather report.

It has been a few days since Summer School has started and we've been extremely busy. All the students at KDES have been working on fundraising money for Six Flags.

Thanks to Ronald, we actually did do our Car Wash on Friday. So many people asked us to come back on Monday so we decided to have another fundraising event today.

Today was sunny and hot.

Here is how much we earned today:

Day Four

Our first fundraising event took place on Friday July 8th .

Today is the first day for our fundraising Events from 11am to 2:30pm.

When we arrived to school today, it was raining hard. We discussed with the class what to do with the fundraising events. Everyone agreed that the car wash should be cancelled. The car wash was postponed till Monday July 11th. The Sundae and Lemonade Stands will still go on.

Ronald noticed that the rain had stopped so he insisted that we go ahead. He begged us to go ahead and do the car wash.

So we got out the hose and dragged it to the front of KDES roundabout and brought all our car wash supplies.

Several dirty cars came by and we were on a cleaning spree!

Students asked the drivers what they wanted.
Car Wash Only $4.00
Car Wash with Vaccuum $6.00

Sometimes people gave donations. A donation means giving extra money to be nice.

Students sprayed water from the hose. Then students used mitts to wash the dirt away with soap and foam.

Students would clean and shine the tires.

The weather was perfect! We had a blast! A big cheers to Ronald who made it possible!

You wouldn't believe how much money we raised!
We earned $118.00 from the Car Wash.
The Lemonade Stand collected $40.00 dollars and the Sundae Stand $127.00 dollars. HURRAH!!! A great start!

Day Three

We needed to get ready for our fundraising event. We needed posters, flyers to advertise our Car Wash.

We also needed to write letters to ask for specific things.

Ethan wrote a letter to Cynthia asking for a vaccuum cleaner.
Fatou asked Don Mahoney, if we could use the hose.

Derika wrote out the rules for the Car Wash.

Ethan asked the class to think about how much should a car wash cost. Everyone agreed. $4.00 for a Car Wash only and $6.00 for a Car Wash and vaccuum

In the afternoon, we went around the school and posted our flyers.

Some of us went to MSSD and to Gallaudet to post our flyers. Others went around Kendall.

Day Two

Today we reviewed the Six Flags movie and discussed what we will do at the amusement park. We made a web to help us organize our ideas. We learned vocabulary words. Here is the list below:

  1. Merry-go-round
  2. Roller coaster
  3. Sun Screen
  4. Sunglasses
  5. water slides
  6. sandals
  7. bumper cars
  8. sundae
  9. to spin
  10. first aid
For our Math activity, we traced each other's body from head to toe.

We ended our day with a community meeting to discuss fundraising. Our goal is to get spending money so we decided to have three fundraising events: Lemonade Stand, Sundae Stand and Car Wash. Team 4-5 is responsible for the Car Wash so we wrote a list.

What do we need for a car wash?

How many bottles do we need?

Do we need to buy it or should we borrow it?

Team 4,5 needed to buy supplies. Our Team Leader told us we can get 100 dollars to buy supplies but we needed to ask the principal for permission. We filled out a petty cash form.

Fatou and Derika went to see Marylin Farmer, our principal. She had to sign the form.

In the afternoon,we walked across Gallaudet to pick up the cash at the Cashier's office and walked back to Kendall with 5 twenty dollar bills.

Daily Activities during Summer School

Morning Message
Every morning before we start the day, we read the agenda of the day what we will do and we read the morning message.

We read it first in English then we sign it in ASL. Sometimes the teacher has something to share with the class, sometimes we learn about the news.

Here is a picture of Ethan reading a morning message in English then signing in ASL.

Writing Journal

Each student had their own writing journal. We write on topics related to our fieldtrip to Six Flags. We wrote about the fundraising events, our experiences on roller coasters at Six Flags.

Daily News/Weather Report
Here is a picture of Gabrielle sharing about the sad event that happened in Six Flags.

A 27 year old lady had a heart attack on one of the rides called "Shark Attack." The ride was closed.

Students look up the weather report and share the information to class.

ASL Practice
Everyday from 12:35-1:20 students practice their signing skills. They learn to express themselves clearly in ASL. They learn to sign directions, action verbs and many more.

Ronald is practicing ASL and Stacey Pedersen is giving feedback on particular signs.

Scrapbook
Everyday from 1:25-2:10 pm we work on our Scrapbook. Sophie Warmack is our Summer School Art teacher.

Welcome to Extended School Year (ESY)!

Dear friends at KDES,

My name is Gabrielle Jones. I am a teacher here at KDES for Team 4,5 this summer.

Guess what?! I am excited about this summer and do you know why? Our theme this year is "A Day at the Amusement Park". We are all going to Six Flags in Maryland on Thursday July 14th. Have you ever been there? Some of you may have already experienced Six Flags. For some of you, this may be your first time.

Did you notice the picture here? Can you find me in the roller coaster? The picture was taken last month when Team 6,7,8 honorees went to Six Flags. I had a blast and I know you will too!

Before we go there, we have a lot of work to do. We need to plan, earn money, know where we are going and what roller coasters they have. We will spend three weeks fundraising, studying and reading about different roller coasters, learning how to use money and to measure heights, learning vocabulary and writing our experiences.

At the end of summer school, each one of you will make a beautiful scrapbook with pictures and writing pieces. Everyone will present their scrapbooks at the KDES auditorium. I can't wait to see your scrapbook.

Are you ready for Six Flags?

I know you will have a lot of fun!

Take Care,

Gabrielle Jones

P.S. I hope you write me back and tell me about your experiences at the Amusement Park.
